Synopsis

A plane carrying a group of schoolboys crashes on a remote, uninhabited island, leaving them to fend for themselves without adult supervision. At first, the boys are thrilled by the prospect of freedom, seeing their predicament as an exciting adventure. Ralph, a charismatic and level-headed boy, is chosen as their leader. He prioritizes building shelters and maintaining a signal fire, hoping for rescue. With Piggy, an intelligent but socially awkward boy, offering insights, Ralph attempts to establish order and a sense of community.

However, not all the boys are content with Ralph’s leadership. Jack, the fiery and competitive leader of the choirboys, grows increasingly obsessed with hunting. His fixation on power and primal survival begins to divide the group. As Jack assembles a rival faction, the boys find themselves caught between Ralph’s ideals of civilization and Jack’s descent into savagery.

The island itself becomes a character, with its beauty masking hidden dangers. Fear of a mysterious "beast" takes hold, spreading paranoia and fracturing trust. The boys’ imaginations transform the island into a sinister and foreboding place, amplifying their inner fears. The idea of the beast, though intangible, feeds their darkest instincts.

Conflicts arise as tensions mount between the groups. Jack’s faction embraces the wildness of the island, painting their faces and letting their primal impulses reign. Meanwhile, Ralph struggles to maintain order, his authority slipping as chaos takes over. Friendships are tested, alliances crumble, and the group teeters on the edge of total breakdown.

As the story unfolds, the boys’ struggle to balance their inherent humanity with their baser instincts forms the core of this gripping tale. The island becomes a microcosm of society, where the veneer of civility is stripped away to reveal the raw and often unsettling nature of mankind.

Through its intense and thought-provoking narrative, Lord of the Flies explores the tension between order and chaos, fear and reason, and the delicate balance that sustains humanity. Will the boys’ efforts to survive bring them together—or drive them apart forever?

Quotes

“The thing is - fear can't hurt you any more than a dream.”

“Maybe there is a beast… maybe it's only us.”

“We did everything adults would do. What went wrong?”

Fun Fact

Golding wrote Lord of the Flies as a response to the optimism of adventure stories like The Coral Island, exploring what might really happen if boys were left to their own devices.
